大阪府島本町、西国街道と水無瀬神宮に挟まれた場所に位置する寺院、
日蓮宗廣宣山妙本寺の納骨堂/合祀墓である。
妙本寺には本堂の中にすでに納骨堂が用意されているのだが、
経済的理由や無縁仏であるという理由でその納骨堂に納められないお骨の
受け皿となる廉価な納骨堂/合祀墓を新たにつくりたいというのが妙本寺住職の願いであった。
境内の一角、9m×6mほどの長方形の空地、その2辺には古いお墓が並んでおり、
そこが今回の計画地であった。
既存のお墓を今までのように参拝することができることと、
納骨堂/合祀墓の建設に先駆けて製作済みであった常不軽菩薩像を載せることが条件であった。
人が故人を偲んで祈る。その祈る対象として、抽象的な白い直方体の量塊を考えた。
量塊は菩薩像の足元に白い雲のようにあり、それは少し地面から浮かんでいる。
その手前に基壇を設け、祭壇や具足台をしつらえて、祈りの領域をつくった。
それらは2つの直方体がズレて重なった造形としてあらわれ、
白い量塊に故人が納骨され、しかるべき時が来れば基壇内に散骨され合祀される。
妙本寺の境内に入っていくと、木々の隙間から納骨堂/合祀墓が垣間見える。
納骨堂/合祀墓の手前には来訪者を迎える白い塀と白い腰掛けがあり、
それらを過ぎて、ようやくお堂の全貌が見える小さな空間に至る。
そこで一息ついて数段を上がると、故人と対峙する祈りの領域に立つ。
この納骨堂/合祀墓は床面積が5m2ほどの小さな建築である。
一般的な建築より小さく、またお墓や仏壇仏具より大きい。
この納骨堂/合祀墓はそんな中間のスケールの存在であることを意識して設計した。
様々な事情の故人が入ることもあり、特定の宗教的表現に寄りすぎない抽象的な構成と最小限の設えとした。
卒塔婆を掛けるための金物や、法要を行うための祭壇と三具足台、金属の手すりや基壇部分の入幅木の表現など、
豪奢にならず、しかし確かな存在感のある建築なるべくつくりあげた。
内部は、骨壷を並べる棚のほか、仄かな自然光を導く障子の掛かった窓、
床の間として機能する縦長のパネル（電気設備が収まっている）など、
外部と同じく簡素ながら故人への礼を失さない空間を目指した。
社会と寺院・墓の関係が問い直されている昨今、
この小さな建築がこれからの墓のあり方を示すひとつのモデルケースとなると考えている。
人が故人を偲んで祈る。そんな祈りのための空間を考えるにあたり、
祈りを捧げる対象があり、祈るための環境があり、
そこで祈る人が自らの内面と向かい合う。
それが今回の納骨堂に求められる事であると考えた。
これから永きにわたりお骨が納められていくこのお堂。
この地に根ざし、人々の心に根ざしていく建築であってほしい。
Myohonji Temple ossuary/joint grave
This ossuary/ enshrined grave is located in Myohon-ji Temple in Shimamoto-cho, Osaka Prefecture,
between Saigoku Kaido and Mizunase Jingu Shrine.
Myohon-ji Temple already has an ossuary in its main hall.
The mission of this project was to build an inexpensive ossuary / enshrinement grave
that would serve as a receptacle for the remains that could not be placed
in the ossuary for financial reasons or because they were unrelated.
The project site was a 9m x 6m rectangular vacant lot
with old graves lining two sides of the lot.
The condition of the project was that the existing graves could be visited as before,
and that a statue of Bodhisattva, which had already been made prior to the construction of the ossuary / enshrinement grave,
be placed on top of the graves.
People pray in memory of the deceased.
As the object of prayer, an abstract white rectangle was conceived.
The rectangular object was placed like a white cloud at the foot of the Bodhisattva statue,
which floated slightly above the ground.
In front of it, an altar was placed to create an area for prayer.
The two rectangles are superimposed on each other.
The deceased are deposited in the white rectangular body,
and later their ashes are scattered and enshrined in the altar.
As one enters the precincts of Myohon-ji Temple,
one can catch a glimpse of the ossuary and enshrined graves through a gap in the trees.
In front of the ossuary, there is a white wall and white benches to welcome visitors,
After passing them, you will finally reach a small space where you can see the whole view of the hall.
After taking a rest there and going up a few steps, you will be standing in the area of prayer facing the deceased.
The ossuary/cemetery is a small structure with a floor space of only 5 square meters.
It is smaller than most buildings and larger than graves and altars.
This ossuary/goguryu was designed to be somewhere in between the two.
Since the deceased may come from a variety of backgrounds, we kept the composition abstract and minimalistic,
not leaning too much toward a specific religious expression.
The metal hardware for hanging stupas, the altar for holding memorial services,
the metal railings, and the baseboards on the platform were all designed to create an architecture that is not extravagant,
but has a definite presence.
Inside, in addition to shelves for displaying urns, there is a shoji window that directs natural light,
a vertical panel that functions as an alcove (where electrical equipment is housed), and other features.
Nowadays, inJpan, the relationship between society and temples and tombs is being reconsidered,
and we believe that this small building will serve as a model for the future of tombs.
This hall will house the bones of the deceased for many years to come.
We hope that the architecture will take root in this place and be rooted in the hearts of the people.
